Using a service design approach, we mapped the end-to-end process of professor payments. We spoke with professors and analyzed the HR payment system to understand how it receives allocation data and how the registrar's office manages professor assignments.
Our investigation into four different registrar's offices, including conversations with their coordinators, highlighted significant inconsistencies. Despite using the same system, each office had its own unique process for assigning professors to undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive education courses. This led us to identify a lack of consistent business rules , shadow processes created as workarounds, and zero integration between assignment, HR, and payroll.
